Financial Controller
Location: Grantham, Lincolnshire (hybrid working available, 3 days onsite 2 remote)
Contract: Full time, permanent
Salary: £85,000 to £100,000 plus benefits and bonus
A growing, well-backed UK SME is seeking an experienced Financial Controller to join its senior leadership team. Reporting directly to the CFO, this is a critical appointment and forms part of a medium-term succession plan to CFO level.
This role will suit an established Financial Controller or Head of Finance who is comfortable operating as the number two in finance within an SME environment and is motivated by the opportunity to progress into a CFO role as the business continues to scale.
The Role
The Financial Controller will be responsible managing a small finance team and also for the financial integrity, control and operational effectiveness of the business, working closely with the CFO to support strategic decision-making and growth.
Key responsibilities include:
• Leading the production of accurate and timely management accounts and statutory accounts
• Ensuring compliance with accounting standards and statutory reporting requirements
• Managing the external audit process and acting as the primary contact for auditors
• Overseeing cash flow forecasting, liquidity and working capital management
• Managing banking relationships and financing arrangements
• Ensuring timely VAT returns and oversight of wider tax compliance with external advisors
• Ownership and continuous improvement of the finance systems (Sage)
• Leading and developing the finance team across statutory accounting, management accounting and purchase ledger
• Providing oversight of the strategic procurement function, driving cost control and process efficiency
• Delivering clear financial insight and analysis to support the CFO and wider leadership team
Candidate Profile
You will be a qualified accountant with strong technical expertise and a proven track record at Financial Controller or Head of Finance level within an SME or owner-managed environment.
Essential requirements:
• ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent qualification
• Strong background in statutory and management reporting
• Proven experience managing cash flow and treasury
• Experience leading and developing finance teams
• Confidence partnering with senior stakeholders and external advisors
Desirable:
• Experience operating within a growing SME
• Exposure to procurement oversight
• Clear ambition and capability to progress to CFO level over time
