Derby
This exhibition explores the contribution Derby made to the First World War during its closing months and the impact on the town in the immediate years after the Armistice on 11 November 1918.
Using stories, objects and images from Derby Museums’ collections, it examines how the War helped change attitudes towards the role of women, and influenced the hopes and expectations for employment, housing and medical care. We look at how Derby’s industries adapted to challenging economic circumstances in post-War Britain. Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn how the signing of the Peace Treaty was celebrated in 1919, how Derby commemorated the sacrifices of her War dead and how Derby tried to support servicemen and women who came home.
